Unable to import certificate. Code: 500

Error Message

When attempting to import an existing server certificate into Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Server using Internet Explorer, the import process fails, and returns the following error:

Unable to import certificate. Code: 500

Cause

Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (ESC) is enabled, preventing the certificate from being imported into Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Server. Refer to Microsoft: FAQ about Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (ESC) for more information on ESC.

Solution or Workaround

Disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration setting in Windows Server Manager, and reattempt the import process.

  1. Log in to the Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Server machine with an administrative account, and launch Server Manager.
  2. In the left pane, select Local Server.
  3. In the PROPERTIES window, search for IE Enhanced Security Configuration. Click On to open the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration window.
Launch Server Manager with an administrative account. Select Local Server, and search for IE Enhanced Security Configuration. Click the On option to modify the necessary settings.
  1. Select the Off radio buttons for Administrators and Users. Click OK.
In the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration window, select the Off radio buttons for Administrators and Users, and click OK to apply the settings.
  1. Import the server certificates. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Import a certificate into the portal or ArcGIS Server: Import the certificate into ArcGIS Server for more information.
Note:
Alternatively, import the certificate using a different web browser, such as Google Chrome.
