PROBLEM

Unable to edit a hosted feature service in ArcMap

Last Published: January 8, 2021

Description

When attempting to edit a hosted feature service in ArcMap, the following error message is returned:

Error:
No editable layers

A similar error message is returned when editing a feature class from versioned data in ArcMap. Refer to Problem: Unable to edit a feature class from versioned data in ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap for more information.

Cause

The problem occurs because a hosted feature service cannot be edited in ArcMap directly. This is a known limitation. ArcMap allows data editing in a local copy of the feature service. Refer to ArcGIS: About editing data from feature services for more information.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve this issue, make edits to the local copy of the feature service in ArcMap, and synchronize the edits with the hosted feature service.

  1. Create a local copy of the hosted feature service for editing. To do so, follow the instructions provided in ArcMap: Making a local copy of a feature service for editing.
  2. Synchronize the edits made in Step 1 with the hosted feature service. Refer to ArcMap: Synchronizing local edits with the server for more information.
