Unable to add metadata to a view table in an enterprise geodatabase

Description

Attempts to edit or view the metadata of a view table stored in an enterprise geodatabase connection in ArcGIS Pro fail, with the following error message returned:

Error:
Item cannot have metadata

The warning message displayed below may also be returned.

Warning:   
The metadata for this item cannot be modified.

Cause

Enterprise geodatabases can contain a combination of geodatabase registered objects, as well as tables or views not registered with the geodatabase. Unregistered objects can be viewed or queried. However, for the objects to participate in a geodatabase functionality such as defining the table’s metadata, they must be registered with the geodatabase.

Defining metadata is one of the specific geodatabase functionalities, and is not available for unregistered view tables. The error is therefore returned when trying to define metadata of a view table not registered with the geodatabase.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve the issue, register the view table with the enterprise geodatabase.

Note:
This task must be performed by the data owner or by a member with database administrator privileges.

1. In Catalog pane, navigate to the database connection.
2. Right-click the view table, and click Manage.
3. Click Register with Geodatabase.

4. In the Register with Geodatabase pane, for Input Datasets, specify the input dataset to register.
5. For Object ID Field, specify the field used as the ObjectID. If a field is not specified, a new ObjectID field is created.
6. Click Run.
