The symbology of a file geodatabase exported from ArcGIS Online is not retained in ArcGIS Pro

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, the symbology of a file geodatabase is not retained when exported from ArcGIS Online. The image below shows the symbology in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer and ArcGIS Pro.

Note:
This workflow applies to ArcGIS Pro 3.0 and above, and may or may not work in ArcGIS Pro 2.x due to changes to the UI. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Migration from ArcGIS Pro 2.x to 3.0  for more information on the changes in ArcGIS Pro 3.0.

Cause

Symbology is a part of layer properties and can only be preserved in a map. Thus, when exporting the file geodatabase from ArcGIS Online to ArcGIS Pro, the ArcGIS Pro default symbology is displayed.

Solution or Workaround

Import and apply the symbology of the hosted feature layer

  1. Open the ArcGIS Pro project and log in to ArcGIS Online with privileges to edit features.
  2. In the Catalog pane, on the Portal tab, click My Content.

  1. Browse to and right-click the hosted feature layer. Click Add To Current Map.
  2. Import the symbology of the hosted feature layer and apply it to the exported feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Import symbology to a feature layer for more information.
  3. Click OK.

Export the hosted feature layer as a feature class

  1. Launch ArcGIS Pro and log in to ArcGIS Online with privileges to edit features.
  2. In the Catalog pane, on the Portal tab, click My Content.

  1. Browse to and right-click the hosted feature layer. Click Add To New > Map.
  2. In the Contents pane, right-click the hosted feature layer added from ArcGIS Online, and click Data > Export Features.
  3. Configure the Export Features parameters as follows:
    1. Select the hosted feature layer from the Input Features drop-down list.
    2. Provide a name for Output Feature Class, and click Browse The Browse icon. to specify the location of the output feature class.
    3. Click OK. The output feature layer is automatically added to the map.
