PROBLEM

The Counts and Amounts drawing style is unavailable in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic

Last Published: May 18, 2021

Description

When attempting to change the style of a numeric field in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic, the Counts and Amounts drawing style is not available, as shown in the image below.

In the Change Style pane, drawing styles include Types (unique symbols) and Location (single symbol), not Counts and Amounts.

Cause

Symbolizing attributes using the Counts and Amounts drawing style requires that the field type be numeric, either Double or Integer. ArcGIS Online recognizes a field type as numeric only when the field values are exclusively numeric characters. If the field values contain letters or special characters, the field is converted to String, a text data type representing a series of alphanumeric symbols and special characters.

For example, 32.8% contains a special character (%) and 45m contains a letter (m). ArcGIS Online reads the values as text.

Solution or Workaround

Use one of the workarounds below to ensure field values are expressed in exclusively numeric characters and change the field type to Double or Integer.

In ArcGIS Online

  1. Remove letters and special characters from the field values.
    1. Log in to ArcGIS Online with feature editing privileges.
    2. Go to Content > My Content.
    3. Browse to the hosted feature layer.
Note:
The option to change field values is only available for hosted feature layers. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Publish hosted feature layers for more information.
  1. On the item details page, click the Data tab.
  2. Open the Table view and double-click the values in the table to edit them. Remove non-numeric characters. Press the Enter key to save changes.

The Table view displays 29 features of the altitude field where the field values consist of alphanumerical characters. For example, 251.869m.

  1. On the hosted feature layer item details page, add a new field to the attribute table. Select Double or Integer for data type. Refer to How To: Add a field to an ArcGIS Online hosted feature service for detailed instructions.

In this example, the new field is ‘altitude_new’ with the Double data type.

The new field is named as altitude_new, with the Double field type.

  1. Populate values using the Calculate Field tool. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Calculate values for a field for detailed instructions.

The Table view displays the new field added; altitude_new is populated and has the same values as altitude.

In Microsoft Excel

  1. Open the CSV.
  2. Remove non-numeric characters from the field.

There are five columns, and in column G, the altitude field consist of alphanumerical characters. For example, 144.58m.

  1. Change the field type.
    1. Select the field column.

The altitude column is in the Column G where it is selected to change the field type.

  1. Right-click the selected column, and click Format Cells…

After right-clicking the selected column, the context menu opens. Format Cells... is selected.

  1. In the Format Cells window, on the Number tab, select Number in the Category list.
  2. Specify decimal places in the Decimal places box.
  3. Click OK.

In the Format Cells window, on the Number tab, there several categories to categorize the values of field. The Number is selected as a the new field type.

  1. Save the CSV file.
  2. Publish the CSV file to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Publish a CSV file for more information.

After the changes are made, the Counts and Amounts drawing style is available in ArcGIS Online Map Viewer Classic.

In the Change Style pane, there are options for drawing style for the altitude_new attribute which include Counts and Amounts (Size) and Counts and Amounts (Color).
