PROBLEM

Poor performance and delayed layer rendering when using the Timeline widget in ArcGIS Experience Builder

Last Published: November 27, 2025

Description

Inconsistent performance occurs when using the Timeline widget connected to a time-enabled hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Experience Builder. This causes the Map widget linked to the Timeline widget to delay symbology rendering or fail to update the map extent when moving the timeline slider forward or backward.

Cause

This issue occurs when the file size of the time-enabled hosted feature layer is excessively large or when the geometry of the layer is too large or complex.

Solution or Workaround

Optimize the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online

Optimize the hosted feature layer to enhance the drawing performance of complex features. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Optimize drawing of complex lines and polygons for more information.

Control the cache of the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online

Increase the maximum cache age to improve performance and reduce the server load of the hosted feature layer. Increasing the cache age reduces the frequency of requests from the browser and content delivery network (CDN). Refer to ArcGIS Online: Control cache for more information.

Delete unnecessary data fields from the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online

Delete unused or redundant fields to reduce the complexity of the hosted feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Delete a field from the Table view for instructions.

Add attribute indexes to the geodatabase in ArcGIS Pro

Attribute indexes allow ArcGIS to locate records without scanning the entire table, which reduces delays when the widget queries time-enabled fields.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the project containing the feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Browse portal collections or ArcGIS Pro: Browse to data to add to a map or scene for instructions to add content to the map.
  2. Add attribute indexes to the geodatabase to enhance the performance of data retrieval and display in the Timeline widget. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create an attribute index in the Catalog pane for instructions.
  3. Publish or overwrite the web layer to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web map using a chosen configuration or ArcGIS Pro: Overwrite a web feature layer for instructions.

Split the large features in ArcGIS Pro

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the project containing the feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Browse portal collections or ArcGIS Pro: Browse to data to add to a map or scene for instructions to add content to the map.
  2. Split the large features into smaller parts to reduce their complexity. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Split a feature for more information.
  3. Publish or overwrite the web layer to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web map using a chosen configuration or ArcGIS Pro: Overwrite a web feature layer for instructions.

Reduce the vertices of the features in ArcGIS Pro

Note:
This workflow requires the ArcGIS Desktop Standard or Advanced license.
  1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the project containing the feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Browse portal collections or ArcGIS Pro: Browse to data to add to a map or scene for instructions to add content to the map.
  2. Remove unnecessary vertices while preserving the overall shape and topology. Refer to How To: Reduce the number of polygon vertices in ArcGIS Pro for instructions.
  3. Publish or overwrite the web layer to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web map using a chosen configuration or ArcGIS Pro: Overwrite a web feature layer for instructions.

Convert multipart features to single-part features in ArcGIS Pro

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, open the project containing the feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Browse portal collections or ArcGIS Pro: Browse to data to add to a map or scene for instructions to add content to the map.
  2. Separate the multipart features into single-part features to simplify the feature layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Explode a multipart feature for more information.
  3. Publish or overwrite the web layer to ArcGIS Online. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Share a web map using a chosen configuration or ArcGIS Pro: Overwrite a web feature layer for instructions.
