PROBLEM

Layers are not displayed after a period of inactivity in ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: July 25, 2024

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, layers are not displayed in a map view after a period of inactivity, even though the layers are available in the Contents pane. For example, after 15 minutes of inactivity, the layers fail to display, and refreshing or closing the project does not restore them.

Cause

The layers are stored on a shared drive or a network drive, such as OneDrive or Google Drive. When layers are stored on a network or shared drive, their stability depends on the connection to that drive. For example, if the machine's internet connectivity is temporarily cut off, the connection to the network drive is affected, causing issues with the layers. Another example is when the shared drive is taken offline for maintenance while an edit is being performed.

Solution or Workaround

Close and relaunch ArcGIS Pro

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, save the project and close ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Relaunch ArcGIS Pro and open the project to refresh the connection between ArcGIS Pro and the shared or network drive.
Note:
If the connection is not refreshed, create a new connection to the shared or network drive. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Connect to a folder for more information.

Save the layers to a local drive

Copy or move the layers from the shared or network drive to a local drive. In ArcGIS Pro, connect to the layers folder and use the layers from the local drive.
