PROBLEM

A hosted feature layer view with a filter applied displays all the layer's data in ArcGIS Online

Last Published: October 28, 2021

Description

In ArcGIS Online, items can be shared via a hosted feature layer view. In some instances, sharing a hosted feature layer view with a filter applied does not restrict viewers from viewing all the layer's data. The image below shows a filter is applied on a shared hosted feature layer view to display only features named SWEETWATER RIVER.

A filter is set to only display features named SWEETWATER RIVER.

However, the image below shows other features are viewable in the hosted feature layer view by removing the filter or deleting the filter expression.

When opening the filtered hosted feature view layer and removing or deleting the filter, other features are viewable.

Cause

By design, filters on a hosted feature layer view apply to the layer's display, but do not disable the viewing of the layer's data.

Solution or Workaround

In ArcGIS Online, set a view definition instead of a filter on the hosted feature layer view to restrict viewers from viewing all the layer's data. The image below shows a view definition is set on the hosted feature layer view to make available only features named SWEETWATER RIVER.

A definition is set on the layer to only make available features named SWEETWATER RIVER.

Only the SWEETWATER RIVER feature is available in the hosted feature layer view, as shown in the image below.

Only the SWEETWATER RIVER is viewable when opening the layer after setting a view definition in ArcGIS Online.
