Repair a corrupted Python installation in ArcGIS Server

Summary

In some instances, the Python installation in ArcGIS Server may become corrupted, typically when attempting to import modules from the ArcGIS Server’s Python environment. The Python installation may become corrupted due to improper manual modification of the Python environment, improper system updates, improper ArcGIS updates, antivirus interference, deletion or movement of key files, or incomplete installations or uninstallations of the Python environment.

This article describes the workflow for repairing Python without uninstalling ArcGIS Server.

Note:
The workflow in this article only applies to ArcGIS Enterprise versions 11.x and above. For ArcGIS Enterprise versions 10.9.x and earlier, refer to How To: Fix an ArcGIS Server machine with a corrupted or missing Python27 file for instructions.

Cause

There are various reasons for file corruption, including running out of disk space, incomplete upgrades, and antivirus scans.

Procedure

  1. Stop the ArcGIS Server service.
    1. In the Windows search bar, type services and click the Services icon.
    2. In the Services window, navigate to the ArcGIS Server service and click Stop.
  2. In File Explorer, navigate to the Python folder, which by default is in:
C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\framework\runtime\ArcGIS\bin
  1. Rename the Python folder to Python_OLD.
  2. Repair ArcGIS Server. Refer to Microsoft: Repair apps and programs in Windows for instructions.
  3. Start the ArcGIS Server service.
    1. In the Windows search bar, type services and click the Services icon.
    2. In the Services window, navigate to the ArcGIS Server service and click Start.
