How To Overwrite 3D multipatch layers on ArcGIS Online using ArcGIS Pro

Last Published: November 1, 2024

Summary

ArcGIS Pro supports overwriting web feature layers on ArcGIS Online by using the Overwrite Web Layer sharing tool. However, when a 3D multipatch layer is pulled into ArcGIS Pro from ArcGIS Online, the Sharing option to Overwrite Web Layer is inactive (grayed out).

This article describes how to overwrite both the hosted feature layer and hosted scene layer in ArcGIS Online by using ArcGIS Pro’s Overwrite Web Layer (Share) function.

Procedure

Caution:
Since a layer is being overwritten, it replaces the original data in the layer. It is always recommended that this data is backed up before moving forward. See: Back up content in ArcGIS Online

This functionality is unavailable because when a 3D layer is brought into ArcGIS Pro, it is usually in a 3D local or Global Scene. 3D maps do not have access to the same sharing functionality as a normal 2D map – specifically, the Overwrite Web Layer tool. Conversely, a regular 2D map does have the “overwrite web layer” tool.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, insert a new map into a new project.

inserting a new map

  1. Add a new updated multipatch layer to the Table of Contents and remove the other default layers (World Topographic Map and World Hillshade).

selecting the multipatch layer

  1. On the Share tab, click Overwrite Web Layer, and select the multipatch hosted feature layer that is being updated in ArcGIS Online.

  1. Analyze the feature to check for errors. If the error Unique numeric IDs are not assigned displays, right-click the error and select Auto Assign IDs Sequentially. This clears the error.

checking for errors

  1. Assign all descriptions and settings accordingly and select Publish. Once the layer is successfully replaced, go to the ArcGIS Online Item Detail page, and select the Data tab to check if everything went through properly.
  2. Navigate back to the Overview page and select the connected hosted scene layer.
  3. Go to the Settings tab of the hosted scene layer and scroll to the bottom. Under Manage Scene layer Cache, select Rebuild Cache. Note: This operation may take some time.
  4. Select the layer that was updated from ArcGIS Pro and select Rebuild Cache again.
  5. Before rebuilding, a message about credit consumption appears. Click OK
  6. After the cache is rebuilt, double-check that the data has been updated by opening a new Scene with the Hosted Scene Layer. Note: This process could take a while depending on how big the new file is.
  7. This can be done by going back to the Overview page and selecting the thumbnail of the item.
