Locate the affected map layer in an enterprise geodatabase when publishing a map service from ArcGIS Pro

Summary

In some instances, the error message, ArcGIS Pro: 001707: Data cannot be opened: <value>, is returned when publishing a map service from ArcGIS Pro. Sometimes, the generic error, Error: Staging failed, is also returned, which can be caused by a faulty map layer. This article provides the workaround to locate the map layer that is causing the issue.

Procedure

Warning: 
While using 7-Zip is beyond Esri Support Service's scope of support, the following workaround has been known to resolve the problem. Note that Esri recommends an IT department be involved in these steps to approve changes to the machine.
  1. Unzip the related ArcGIS Pro project file (.aprx) with 7-Zip.
  2. Launch Notepad++, and navigate to Search > Find....
  3. In the Find window, select the Find in Files tab.
  4. Search for the affected map layer in Find what, and set Directory to the extracted ArcGIS Pro project file.
  5. Click Find All to locate the affected map layer shown in the related XML document the layer is located in.
