Summary
In ArcGIS Pro, arrow symbols in a map can be used to display the direction of a journey in a more intuitive manner. These arrows can also be customized to fit specific requirements using the tools available in ArcGIS Pro for a distinct representation of the data on the map. This article provides the steps to add customized arrowheads in ArcGIS Pro.
Procedure
- Add the arrowhead to the line.
- Open the map package in ArcGIS Pro with the line layers to be modified.
- On the Contents pane, click the line layer to select it, and the Feature Layer contextual tab set displays on the ArcGIS Pro app ribbon.
- Click the Appearance tab, on the Feature Layer contextual tab set.
- When the Symbology pane displays, select the Primary symbology tab.
- Select the Single Symbol option on the Primary symbology tab. Single symbol symbology applies similar symbols to all features in a layer. The example for this article's layer only has one feature.
- Click the symbol beside Symbol to open the Format Line Symbol pane.
- At the top of the Format Line Symbol pane, click the Gallery tab and then select the line to be formatted. In this example, the Highway symbol is selected.
- At the top of the Format Line Symbol pane, click the Properties tab and select the Structure tab.
- Under the Layers section, click Add symbol layer to display the drop-down menu and select Marker layer.
The marker layer is added above the existing line layers, and a preview of the current line symbol format is displayed in the window at the bottom of the pane.
- Click the Layers tab to change the marker layer from a circle to an arrowhead.
- Select the Shape marker symbol layer to format its properties and click the Font form button under the Appearance section.
- In the Choose a character dialog box, select ESRI Arrowhead from the Font drop-down menu.
- Select the appropriate arrowhead and click OK.
The current symbology format is displayed in the preview window.
- Change the appearance of the arrowhead.
- In the Symbology pane, click the Properties > Layers tab.
- Under the Appearance section, click the Color drop-down menu button. The color palette menu displays. Select the Eyedropper tool to activate it.
Note:
The Eyedropper tool is available wherever a color palette is present. The tool picks a color from a layer in the active view and applies it to the current symbol.
A square magnifier displays with the pointer to show the currently selectable color when the Eyedropper tool is active. To apply the color to the symbol, left-click the map, scene, or layout. After clicking a color, the symbol's color is set to the new color and the tool is deactivated.
- On the map, click the Eyedropper tool on the interior color of the line.
The color of the arrowhead in the preview window is similar to the interior line color.
- For this example, the desired placement is at the end of each line layer. To do this, scroll down the Layers tab and expand the Marker Placement section by clicking the arrow to the left.
- Click the Placement drop-down menu and select At extremities.
- Click the Extremities drop-down menu and select At end. This formats the arrowheads so they are displayed at the end of each line layer.
- Format the size of the arrowhead. For steps, refer to How To: Modify the arrowhead size of an arrow line symbol in ArcGIS Pro.
Note:
Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Reverse the direction of a polyline if the arrowhead displays at the beginning of the line instead of the end.
The map displays the new symbology as intended.
