Error Message

Attempts to import a license file to authorize ArcGIS Enterprise portal fail, and return the following error message:

The license file is invalid. The file signature could not be validated.

The following are possible causes for the error:

  • The license file has been used in the previous ArcGIS Enterprise portal deployment.
  • The license file is corrupted.

Solution or Workaround

The following are steps to resolve the error:

The user must have permissions to perform licensing actions in My Esri to complete the workflow below.
  1. Cancel the current license file.
    1. Log in to My Esri.
    2. Click My Organizations > Licensing.
    3. In the License Management section, click License Files > License Files related to Portal for ArcGIS and Pro.
    4. Click the license file ID, and click Cancel License File.
  2. Obtain a new license file. Refer to Portal for ArcGIS: Obtain a portal license file from My Esri for steps to do so.
Alternatively, replace the current license file with a new one without cancelling the current one. Refer to How To: Edit License Files in My Esri for Portal for ArcGIS 10.7 and later versions for more information. This workflow is only applicable to Portal for ArcGIS 10.7 and later versions.
