Error Message

This article does not apply to ArcGIS Data Store 11.0 and later as the updatelicense command utility is no longer used. The ArcGIS Data Store configuration updates the renewed license. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: updatelicense for more information.

In the Command Prompt window, attempts to update the ArcGIS Data Store license using the updatelicense command utility fail, and return the following error message:

Error encountered: Machine '<MachineName>' returned an error. 'Failed to update license for relational data store '<DatabaseIdentifier>'.'

Cause

The ArcGIS Data Store relational data store is placed in read-only mode. The primary relational data store is placed in read-only mode if the disk space is less than 1024 MB or the data store is manually placed in read-only mode. Run the describedatastore command utility in the Command Prompt window, and search for 'Data Store mode' and 'Free disk space' to check the mode and the available disk space of the relational data store.

Solution or Workaround

Note:
Proceed to Step 2 if the primary ArcGIS Data Store machine has enough free disk space.

1. Increase the disk space of the primary data store machine. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: Disk space requirements for more information.

Note:
Contact the organization's IT Department for assistance on increasing the data store disk space.

2. In the Command Prompt window, run the changedatastoremode command utility to place the relational data store in read-write mode.
3. Run the updatelicence command utility to update the ArcGIS Data Store license.
