Error Message

In ArcGIS Pro, when a non-owner group member is attempting to append data to a hosted feature layer shared in an ArcGIS Online group, the following error message is returned:

160228: The user does not have permission to execute the operation.
The error message is returned in ArcGIS Pro when attempting to append data to a hosted feature layer.

Cause

  • The editing capabilities of the hosted feature layer are not enabled in ArcGIS Online.
  • The Add check box under ‘What kind of editing is allowed?’ is unchecked in the hosted feature layer settings in ArcGIS Online.

Solution or Workaround

In ArcGIS Online, enable the editing capabilities and check the Add check box of the hosted feature layer to append data to it using the Append tool in ArcGIS Pro. Perform the following steps to do so:

Note:
For groups without update capabilities, only organization’s administrators or the item owner can enable editing of the hosted feature layer shared in the group.
  1. Log in to ArcGIS Online, navigate to Content > My Groups.
  2. On the My Groups page, browse to the hosted feature layer, click More Options Click the More Options button to display the drop-down list., and select View item details.
  3. On the item details page, check the Enable editing. and Add check boxes of the hosted feature layer on the Settings tab. Refer to ArcGIS Online: Manage editor settings for more information.
The Enable editing. and Add check boxes must be checked for group members to append data to the hosted feature layer shared in the group using the Append tool in ArcGIS Pro.
