PROBLEM

Attachments are dropped when exporting a feature class from an enterprise geodatabase to a file geodatabase and vice versa

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

In some instances, attachments are dropped when a feature class is exported between geodatabases. A common scenario for this issue is when attempting to export a feature class with attachments from an enterprise geodatabase to a file geodatabase.

Cause

Export and import operations do not carry relationship class and related items along, resulting in drop of attachments.

Solution or Workaround

Copy and paste the feature class with attachments to the desired geodatabase. To transfer a feature class with attachments from a enterprise geodatabase (EGDB) to a file geodatabase (FGDB), follow the instructions provided below:

  1. Create a new feature dataset in the target FGDB using the spatial reference of one of the feature classes of the original enterprise geodatabase.
  2. Copy the required feature classes and paste it to the newly created feature dataset in the FGDB. The attachments are successfully copied.
Note:
The above given steps are in a scenario where the feature classes with attachments needs to be copied to a FGDB. The same workflow can be utilized when copying feature classes from a FGDB to another FGDB or from an EGDB to another EGDB.
