Frequently asked question
When ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1 released in April 2023, .NET 6 was required to run the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS). As of November 2024, ArcGIS Enterprise Web Adaptor (IIS) 11.1 is now supported on .NET 8, in addition to .NET 6.
ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1 is supported by Esri through April 2029; .NET 6 is supported by Microsoft through November 2024. Due to .NET 6’s comparatively shorter product life cycle, ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1 will be fully supported when .NET 6 is not.
As of November 2024, ArcGIS Enterprise Web Adaptor (IIS) 11.1 is now supported on .NET 8, in addition to .NET 6. This will allow for a larger window in which ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1 and .NET are supported by Esri and Microsoft, respectively.
If ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1 is already deployed, no additional steps are necessary after completing an in-place upgrade of .NET 6 to .NET 8. The ArcGIS Web Adaptor is designed to work seamlessly with the latest version of .NET installed on the designated machine. Therefore, it will function with both .NET 6 and .NET 8 without necessitating any modifications. After the IIS restart is completed, as part of the post-upgrade process for .NET 8, both the Portal for ArcGIS and the ArcGIS Server Web Adaptor will operate with the newly installed version.
The same ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS) installer will work with both .NET 6 and .NET 8. The current build is designed to automatically detect and install the latest version of the ASP.NET Core Runtime – Windows Hosting Bundle, which now includes .NET 8.
Note: Esri recommends using the latest .NET version to benefit from improved performance, enhanced security, and feature compatibility.
