  1. [map design, network analysis] A type of thematic map that shows the magnitude and direction of movement of a phenomenon using line or arrow symbols of variable width. Typical uses for flow maps include those that show networks, such as traffic movement or utility lines; distributions, such as population, logistics, or trade migrations; and surfaces, such as weather or water flow patterns.
