compromise projection
URL copiedShare URL
[map projections, thematic mapping]
A map projection that minimizes inaccuracies in shape, area, distance, and direction—rather than preserving any single property perfectly. For example, unlike conformal projections (which preserve shape) or equal-area projections (which preserve area), compromise projections incrementally spread distortion across the entire map. Compromise projections are most commonly used in maps that require a generalized representation of global geography rather than precise area measurements. Some examples of compromise projections include the Robinson and Eckert I projections.
