This is a known limitation for the Utility Network Trace widget in Enterprise 11.1. Support for adding starting points and barriers on Subtype Group Layer features was added in the Maps SDK for JavaScript UtilityNetworkTrace widget at 4.27 and is available starting at Enterprise 11.2.
