When the database view is joined to a definition query layer, the view fails to publish to ArcGIS for Server and results in this error: "Failed to update the published service with the server-side data location."

Workaround

Publish the database view from ArcMap 10.3.1 to ArcGIS 10.4 for Server, or publish it from ArcMap 10.4 to ArcGIS 10.3.1 for Server.
