This is due to the internal styling of TextElement. Users can view this in Chrome's developer tools. This styling overrides what is set within the CSS and is by design. As a workaround, work with SVG and CSS to get the desired results. Graphics are rendered using SVG, so use text attributes such as fill, fill opacity, stroke, and so forth.
