All .NMF files will start a new version of ArcGIS Explorer. The new release of ArcGIS Explorer introduces an .NMC file extension for layers. These are added to the map. So in summary. NMF is a full complete map and opens in a new session, or if opened throught the application, replaces the map that you are currently looking at. NMC is a layer. A part of an ArcGIS Explorer map.
