Erro
If a selection symbol is added to a FeatureLayer outside of its visible scale range, the graphic is removed when zooming in to its visible scale range.

Only add the service to the map when it is visible.
OR
Re-add the selection symbol when it gets removed:
featureLayer.selectFeatures(query, FeatureLayer.SELECTION_NEW);
