The Maplex Label Engine is calculating barriers, and it does this by going over the polygon boundary vertex pair by vertex pair. The only way to address the issue is to use polygons with fewer vertices. If the highly detailed polygon geometries are required, consider creating a second layer used only for labeling with simplified polygons. There is no need to display the polygon boundaries.
