HOW TO

Start or Stop ArcGIS Server on Solaris and Linux

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe the procedure for starting or stopping ArcGIS Server on Solaris and Linux.

Procedure

To start or stop ArcGIS Server, run the 'startserver' or 'stopserver' scripts as the owner of ArcGIS Server. These scripts are located in the $AGSHOME/scripts directory.

Note:
$AGSHOME refers to the ArcGIS Server installation directory

Running these scripts starts or stops Server Object Manager (SOM), Server Object Container(s) (SOC), and all dependent processes including X Virtual Frame Buffer (Xvfb) and the ArcGIS Server instance.

When the server machine is rebooted, ArcGIS Server automatically shuts down and starts using a link to shutdown and startup scripts that are placed in the /etc/rc* folder.

To start or stop ArcGIS Server, follow the steps below:

  1. In ArcGIS Server, browse to the following directory:
    > cd $AGSHOME/scripts
  2. To stop the server, run the following script:
    > ./stopserver

The following message will be printed on the console:

    Stopping server
    Stopping Xvfb on port xxx
To start the server, run the following script:
    > ./startserver

The following message will be printed on the console:

    Starting Xvfb on port xxx
    Note:
When stopping and immediatly starting the server, allow 25-30 seconds after stopping the server before running the startserver script. This ensures that all the processes are properly shutdown before restarting the ArcGIS Server.
