Answer
The ArcMap Server allows for the use of existing ArcGIS map project files or .MXDs in ArcIMS which provides ArcIMS users of the richer cartographic functionality available in ArcMap. ArcGIS Publisher maps or PMF files can also be published using ArcMap Server. This is the primary purpose of this functionality.
The ArcMap Server extends the basic ArcIMS functionality and integrates ArcGIS Desktop with the ArcIMS product and is not intended for performance comparisons.
Shapefiles, rasters, ArcSDE vector and raster layers as well as personal geodatabase feature classes can be served out in ArcMap Services.
Known limits for the ArcMap Server feature are listed in the ArcIMS Online Help which can be accessed either through the shortcut ArcIMS Help in the Start menu, or the Help option in the ArcIMS Administrator:
· Overview of ArcMap Server, Known Limits.
· Authoring maps for ArcMap Server.
