Bogue
When using a Definition Query longer than 4095 characters against a 9.0 ArcSDE Server, the data fails to draw and the following error is returned: "One or more layers failed to draw."

Solution de contournement
1. Consider making use of alias against long names of featureclass/columns. This way you may be able to give some more character length for your query.2. Consider breaking down the query in smaller selection sets. For Ex. the resultant selection set of principle query may be stored as a new featureclass and the subquery may be designed to run on this new selection set.
