Based on the notes below, this is by design. Map.defaultExtent is only used when a new map is created, it is not to be used to change the extent of a current map. At version 2.5 we are introducing a new ArcGISProject function called ActiveView. This will allow you to get to the camera of a map that is associated with a view.
