Solution de contournement

Edit the lowerkangaroo_final.emf in Illustrator (tested in CS2); right-click on the graphics and select "Ungroup" and export the graphic to EMF from Illustrator. Use this new version as an inserted picture in ArcMap and the output to PDF is fine.Note: I tried to reproduce the problem with grouped elements by creating a new graphic in Illustrator CS2 that contained multiple grouped text strings, but could not reproduce the problem.
