Solution de contournement

Upgrade ArcGIS/SDE version to 9.2.Customer noticed that his feature class schema had a field called "Area" when the schema was imported into the SDE database. If that field name is changed to something else, such as "Area1," and mapped to the corresponding "Area" field when the feature data is imported, then later there was no error in performing field calculations on text fields in that feature class.
