Raster layers in ArcMap using a classified symbol and applying 'Use Hillshade Effect' fails to provide a consistent display. The results are patchy and often displayed as horizontal stripes across the data.

If using this method to display hillshade, use the Bilinear resampling technique in the Display tab. The better method to perform hillshade is to use the Hillshade Raster Function or the Hillshade button in the Image Analyst window.

Solution de contournement

Run the Hillshade tool and create a new layer to display.
