ESRI® announces the ArcIMS 9.3 SP1 ArcMap Server Performance Patch when using ArcSDE datasource. This patch addresses an issue specific to ArcIMS 9.3 SP1 ArcMap Services that use ArcSDE data. For every Image or Feature request, ArcMap server reestablishes the connection to the datasource causing a slowdown in performance. We recommend that all ArcIMS 9.3 SP1 installations that have ArcMap services consuming ArcSDE data to download and install this Patch at their earliest convenience to ensure the highest quality experience when working with ArcIMS 9.3 Service Pack 1.

Issues Addressed with this Patch


  • NIM041146: After installing Service Pack 1, ArcIMS 9.3 ArcMap Service accessing data from ArcSDE, performs slower because it resets the connection to the datasource for each request.

Installing the Patch On Windows

ArcIMS 9.3 Service Pack 1 with the ArcMap Server extension must be installed before installing this Patch. ArcMap Server is not installed by default. Make sure you have write permission to your ArcIMS installation location, and that no one is using ArcIMS.

  1. Download the file to a location other than the installation location:

  2. From your Services control panel, stop the ArcIMS Tasker, ArcIMS Monitor, and ArcIMS Application Server (in that order). Stop the Z3950 connector service if that is running.
  3. Make a backup copy of ArcGIS\bin\MapServer.dll.
  4. Double click IMS-93sp1-MSPerf-Patch.EXE and follow the instructions on your screen.
  5. From your Services control panel, start the ArcIMS Application Server, ArcIMS Monitor, and ArcIMS Tasker (in that order). Start the Z3950 connector if necessary.

Installing the Patch On Solaris and Linux

ArcIMS 9.3 Service Pack 1 with the ArcMap Server extension must be installed before installing this Patch. ArcMap Server is not installed by default. Make sure you have write permission to your ArcIMS installation location, and that no one is using ArcIMS.

    % tar -xvf gis93sp1-msperf-patch-mapsrvr-<platform>.tar
  4. Stop your server.

    % $AIMSHOME/qs_scripts/stop_arcims (ArcIMS ArcMap Server)
  5. Make a backup copy of arcgis/bin/libmapserver.so.
  6. Start the installation by typing:

    % ./applypatch

    This will start the dialog for the menu-driven installation procedure. Default selections are noted in parentheses ( ). To quit the installation procedure, type 'q' at any time.

  7. To re-start the server:

    • Open a new terminal, type:

      % $AIMSHOME/qs_scripts/start_arcims (in the new terminal) (ArcIMS ArcMap Server)

How to identify which Patch is installed


Windows

To find out what products are currently installed on your machine, download the PatchFinder93.exe utility and run it from your local machine. This utility provides a report detailing which ArcGIS products are currently installed on your machine. This will help determine which product Service Packs you should install on your machine. The report also details which service packs have been installed. The report is displayed when the utility is run and a servicepack.txt log file is created in your temp folder. The Service Pack Finder utility searches for the following ArcGIS products.

    ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) Includes the ArcReader fixes for the ArcReader FEATURE.

Run the utility by typing:

% ./PatchFinder
