Increasing the field length of string data causes the field type VARCHAR2 to change to NVARCHAR2 when the DBTUNE parameter UNICODE_STRING is set to FALSE.

1. Add a new field to the feature class at the desired length. 2. Calculate the new field with the original field using the Field Calculator. 3. Delete the original field. 4. Rename the new field.
