Drawing performance in ArcMap is slower when symbology is based on attribute queries rather than simple symbology.

The multi-field unique value renderer must query three additional fields from the database and do symbol lookup per feature to draw. Additionally, there's context switching with draw of each feature. For these reasons, the draw is expected to be slower.
