ArcGIS Online produces generic unhelpful error message when adding a zipped shapefile over the size limit to a web map.

This issue seems to be because the upload / processing request times out. In this case, the error message is correct. When the request does not time and is able to successfully complete, the full error message that the file is too big is correctly displayed.
