After opening and closing the Select By Location dialog box in an MXD file containing a large number of layers, the performance degrades significantly when manually selecting and unselecting features.

Solución alternativa

Do not open the Select By Location dialog box without using it. Using the dialog box still has some performance degradation afterwards, but not as significant as not using the dialog box.
