PROBLEM

Some geometries in a Business Analyst Output Feature Class with graduated color symbology may not draw if there are more than 10,000 records

Last Published: March 3, 2023

Description

Graduated color symbology based on a field’s values may result in some geometries not drawing in the map. This issue has surfaced in the output of Business Analyst tools, including Huff Model, Generate Grids and Hexagons, and Color Coded Layer.

Cause

The geometries that are not displayed in the map have symbology field values that fall outside of the minimum and maximum range of values. These data extent values are established by sampling the first 10,000 records in the attribute table. If a feature class has more than 10,000 records, some symbology field values may fall outside of the displayed range. These features will not be displayed as they do not fall within the thematic groupings.

Solution or Workaround

The solution is to increase the symbology sample size to a value that is equal to or larger than the total number of records in the feature class with symbology applied. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the feature class in the Contents pane and select Symbology.
  2. In the Symbology pane, click the Advanced Symbology Options button in the top left, and expand the Sample Size menu.
  3. Update the Maximum Sample Size text box value to a number that is larger than the number of records in the symbolized feature class.
  4. Click Enter to refresh the settings and reprocess symbology.

The symbolized features redraw and all geometries are displayed as expected since the new symbology ranges include the values for all records.
