HTTP Error 500 Internal Server Error is returned when accessing Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Server Web Adaptors

Description

When accessing Portal for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Server through the ArcGIS Web Adaptor URLs, with the web adaptors configured on virtual directories, the following error is returned:

Error:
500 Internal Server Error

The HTTP Internal Server Error response code indicates that an unexpected condition is preventing the connection between the server and the requested page.

Cause

The virtual directory that is hosting the web adaptor has credentials assigned. These credentials do not match the ArcGIS Server account credentials.

Solution or Workaround

Use the steps below to update the Microsoft IIS Virtual Directory credentials to match the ArcGIS Server account credentials.

  1. Open IIS Manager.
    1. On the Start screen, click Control Panel.
    2. Click System and Security and click Administrative Tools.
    3. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Edit the Virtual Directory credentials. Refer to Microsoft: How to create a new Virtual Directory.
