Unable to create a story map due to unsupported display size

Description

Attempting to create a story map in Classic Story Maps or ArcGIS StoryMaps fails and returns the following error messages:

Error:   
An error has occurred
The <story map template> builder is not supported at this display size. If possible, resize your browser to access the builder or please build your story on a device with a larger screen.
Error:   
This screen size is too small
The story builder requires a certain amount of screen space. If you’re using a tablet, try rotating it to the landscape orientation, or try editing your story on a device with a larger screen.

Cause

The desktop or mobile device screen does not have sufficient screen space.

Solution or Workaround

Reduce the zoom level of the web browser to provide ample space for the story map builder.
