PROBLEM

Exporting a map series to PDF fails to honor the index layer

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

In ArcGIS Pro, the 'Clip to index feature' option is used to visually clip the layers of a map series to the boundary of the features in an index layer. In some instances, the option does not honor the index features when exporting the map layout to a PDF file. The output PDF file includes features outside the index features. This article provides steps to resolve the issue.

Cause

The index layer is not the lowermost layer in the map frame.

Solution or Workaround

  1. In the Contents pane, move the index layer below other existing layers and on top of the basemap. The image below shows the order of the index layer, other map layers, and the basemap in the Contents pane.

  1. Export the map series to a PDF file using the Selected index feature option. For more information, refer to ArcGIS Pro: Export options. The output PDF file only includes features that are within the index features.
