PROBLEM

DigSmart software, an app from DigAlert, scrambles text boxes in ArcMap when exported to PDF

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

DigAlert was created in response to a tragic accident in 1976 in which a gas line was ruptured during a construction project.  The subsequent explosion killed 9 people, and leveled a city block in Culver City, causing millions of dollars in damages.

There is an app that can be used in ArcGIS Desktop that includes the ability to format text boxes.  However, this app corrupts text boxes that are created with the out-of-the-box tools in ArcMap when the MXD is exported to PDF.  The text is no longer aligned, and letters that make up the text in the box are substituted for different letters.  The result is meaningless strings of letters.

Cause

There is a software conflict between the DigSmart app and ArcGIS Desktop that causes text boxes created in an ArcMap document to be corrupted when the MXD is exported to PDF.

Solution or Workaround

When DigSmart is installed on the computer with ArcGIS Desktop, and the map is exported to PDF format, any text boxes in the map must be created using the DigSmart tools.
