Invalid version name when attempting to rename a version via a service

Error Message

When attempting to rename a branch version, under certain configurations of an ArcGIS Pro/ArcGIS Server client with an Enterprise geodatabase, the following error may be returned:

ERROR 999999: Something unexpected caused the tool to fail. Please refer to the error help for potential solutions, or contact Esri Technical Support http://esriurl.com/support.
Invalid version name.
Failed to execute (AlterVersion).

These configurations include:

  • An ArcGIS Pro 2.1/ArcGIS Server 10.6 client with a 2.1/10.6 Enterprise geodatabase
  • An ArcGIS Pro 2.2/ArcGIS Server 10.6.1 client with a 2.1/10.6 Enterprise geodatabase
  • An ArcGIS Pro 2.1/ArcGIS Server 10.6 client with a 2.2/10.6.1 Enterprise geodatabase

Cause

This error is caused by attempting to alter a branch version (for example, renaming a version) present in multiple services from the same data store (an enterprise geodatabase).

Solution or Workaround

Upgrade the ArcGIS Pro client and Enterprise geodatabase to 2.2/10.6.1.
