PROBLEM

ArcGIS Online basemaps display with white gridlines

Last Published: March 30, 2021

Description

In ArcGIS Online, when zooming in and out of a basemap with the zoom level set to above or below 100%, white gridlines on the basemap are displayed. This issue occurs when Google Chrome or Internet Explorer is used as the browser to view the basemaps. The images below show the Imagery basemap in ArcGIS Online when the zoom level is set to 125% (top image) and 75% (bottom image) in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

Cause

This is a known limitation of the two browsers. White gridlines are displayed when the zoom level is adjusted to above or below the default 100% using the browser's zoom option. Similar gridlines appear when zooming in and out using the basemap's zoom option with the browser's zoom level set to above or below 100%.

Solution or Workaround

When using Google Chrome or Internet Explorer to view basemaps in ArcGIS Online, use the basemap's zoom in or zoom out option with the zoom level of the browser set to the default 100%.

Note:
Remember to change the browser's zoom level to 100% in the current tab if the previous tab was opened with a zoom level of below or above 100%. This is because the browser applies the previous tab's zoom level.

Note also that even if the browser scale is set to 100%, if the display settings for the monitor are set to a scale other than 100%, the gridlines will still appear.
