An error occurred while creating the printed map

Error Message

Printing a web map from the map viewer in ArcGIS Online fails with the following error returned:

Error:   
An error occurred while creating the printed map.

Cause

• The web map contains a layer that is a secured ArcGIS Server service.
• The web map uses HTTP, while the organization using the print service in ArcGIS Online allows access to the organization through HTTPS only.
• A large number of feature layers or feature services in the web map exceeds the 10MB print size limit.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, select one of the options below to resolve this issue:

Use the ArcGIS Server PrintingTools utility service in ArcGIS Online

Note:
Only administrators can configure the site's utility services in ArcGIS Online. For more information, refer to ArcGIS Online: Configure utility services.

1. Open the ArcGIS Server REST page and under Folders, click Utilities > Utilities/ PrintingTools (GPServer).
2. In the Utilities/ PrintingTools (GPServer) page, under Tasks: click Export Web Map Task.
3. Copy the URL of the Task: Export Web Map Task in the address bar.
4. In ArcGIS Online, paste the URL into the Printing text box in the Utility Services tab. For more information, refer to ArcGIS Online: Printing.
5. Open the web map in ArcGIS Online, and print the web map.

Use HTTPS in the URL of the web map instead of HTTP and print the web map

If the web map is not configured to use HTTPS, refer to ArcGIS Server: Secure ArcGIS Server communication.

Remove unrelated feature layers or feature services from the web map or use hosted tile layers and print the web map
