HOW TO

Upgrade an ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server site

Last Published: May 4, 2021

Summary

The instructions outlined below are necessary if upgrading from ArcGIS Enterprise versions 10.5, 10.5.1 or 10.6 to versions 10.6 or 10.6.1 and the GeoAnalytics Server site contains one or more machines.

Procedure

Prior to upgrading to ArcGIS Enterprise 10.6 or 10.6.1, always complete the following steps:

  1. Clear the cache from all browsers used on each machine in the deployment.
  2. Complete the steps outlined in ArcGIS Server: Back up and restore your ArcGIS Server site configuration.

Prior to upgrading a multi-machine GeoAnalytics Server site using the steps outlined in ArcGIS Enterprise: Upgrade using the setup program (Windows) or ArcGIS Enterprise: Upgrade ArcGIS Server on Linux complete the following:

Windows:

  1. Use Windows Service Manager to verify the ArcGIS Server service status, and stop the service if it is running.
  2. Restart all machines in the ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server site.
  3. When restarted, once again use Windows Service Manager to verify the ArcGIS Server service status, and stop the service if it is running (repeat Step 1).
  4. Check for detached ArcGIS Server processes that are known to impede the upgrade process:
    1. Open Task Manager to view running processes.
    2. Click More Details if& not open by default.
    3. Navigate to the Details tab. Right-click the Name header and click Select Columns.
    4. In the Select Columns dialog, check the Command Line option and click OK.
    5. Sort the processes by the Name column.
    6. Look for processes named cmd.exe. In the Command Line column, check for paths beginning with <ArcGIS Server install location>\ArcGIS\Server\. If these processes exist, right-click and select End Process for these processes.
    7. Look for processes named java.exe. In the Command Line column, check for paths beginning with <ArcGIS Server install location>\ArcGIS\Server\. If these processes exist, right-click and select End Process for these processes.
    8. Repeat the above steps for all machines in the GeoAnalytics Server site.
  5. Once it is confirmed that no detached ArcGIS Server processes are running, continue to sequentially upgrade each ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server in the site using the upgrade steps in ArcGIS Enterprise: Upgrade using the setup program(Windows).

Linux:

  1. Stop the ArcGIS Server service on all machines in the GeoAnalytics Server site using the script <ArcGIS Server install location>/arcgis/server/stopserver.sh.
  2. Check for detached ArcGIS Server processes that are known to impede the upgrade process:
    1. Use the command ps –ef | grep arcgis/server to identify any detached ArcGIS Server processes.
    2. Look for processes with paths beginning with <ArcGIS Server install location>/arcgis/server/. If these processes exist, use the kill -9 command to terminate the detached ArcGIS Server processes.
    3. Repeat this workflow for all machines in the GeoAnalytics Server site.
  3. Once it is confirmed that no detached ArcGIS Server processes are running, continue to sequentially upgrade each ArcGIS GeoAnalytics Server in your site using the upgrade steps in ArcGIS Enterprise: Upgrade ArcGIS Server on Linux (Linux).
