How To: Upload images or photos simultaneously to a survey in Survey123 for ArcGIS

Summary

In some instances, a survey may require more than one image or photo to be uploaded simultaneously when collecting information. The photos or images collected may be helpful in studying and viewing the effects of natural disasters or infrastructural damages.

Procedure

Choose one of the options described below to upload images or photos simultaneously in Survey123 for ArcGIS:

Create a single choice question to add more images
Multiple images or photos can be added by creating a single choice question set to rules with a relevant statement. The relevant statement enables users to skip or reveal more questions based on their answers. For example, in an image question, after the respondent uploads an image, a Yes or No question is displayed for the respondent to upload more images. This option allows the creator of the survey to restrict the number of photos uploaded.

Note:
Although this option allows multiple images to be added to the survey, it also allows the creator of the survey to restrict the number of photos uploaded.

The steps below describe how to upload up to three images.

  1. Log in to Survey123 Connect for ArcGIS and create a new survey or open an existing survey form.
  2. In the survey form, create an image question in the type column. Set the name and label for the image question. In this example, the name is set as image_1 and the label as Photo.
Image question
  1. Create a select_one[list_name] question in the type column and replace the [list-name] with yes_no.
Select one question
  1. Click the choices tab and assign the name and label for the yes_no question. In this example, for the Yes option, set the name as yes and the label as Yes. For the No option, set the name as no and the label as No.
Choices tab
  1. Click the survey tab and set the name and label for the yes_no question. Type no in the default column.
Name, labels and default column
  1. Copy the rows containing the image question and the select_one[list_name] question and paste them in the next empty row to create multiple questions for the second and the third image. Depending on the number of images required, delete the select_one[list_name] questions after the last image. In this example, the workflow only requires three images, so the third image question is deleted.

Use repeats

Repeats attach images or photos to the related table. Each repeat creates a table related to the survey's feature service. So, there is no limitation for the number of photos or images that can be uploaded in a survey when using repeats. For more information, refer to Survey123 for ArcGIS: Repeats.

  1. Log in to Survey123 Connect for ArcGIS and create a new survey or open an existing survey form.
  2. In the survey tab, create a begin repeat question in the type column. Set the name and label for the question. In this example, the name is set as photorepeat and the label as Photos.
Begin repeat
  1. Create an image question in the type column and set the name and label for the image question.
