FAQ: Is it possible to create a custom variable for mean age in Comparison Reports in the Business Analyst Web App?

Question

Is it possible to create a custom variable for mean age in Comparison Reports in the Business Analyst Web App?

Answer

Mean is a popular statistical measurement to determine the average value of a sample but it is not possible to create a custom variable for mean age in Comparison Reports in the Business Analyst Web App. This is because the U.S. Census Bureau only provides summarized data from their overall data collection at a block group level using the smallest geographical unit with a population of 600 and 3000 people. Without access to the raw unsummarized data, it is not possible to create a custom variable for mean age in Comparison Reports in the Business Analyst Web App.

Note:
For more information on creating a Comparison Report, refer to Business Analyst Web App: Create Comparison Reports.

As an alternative, use the median age. Median is a more accurate statistical calculation method than using mean because the mean can be skewed by a single individual, whereas the median cannot be skewed in the same manner. Use the median age by selecting the 2017 Median Age (Esri), which is already available in the Popular variables section under the Comparison Reports tab in the Business Analyst Web App by following the steps:

  1. In the Business Analyst Web App, click the Reports tab and select the existing project or create a new project.
  2. Click the Comparison Reports tab or the Comparison Reports icon.
