FAQ: Is it possible to keep a Collector for ArcGIS account logged in without a connection for an extended period?

Question

Is it possible to keep a Collector for ArcGIS account logged in without a connection for an extended period?

Answer

Collector for ArcGIS uses the ArcGIS REST API to generate the access token. The default duration of an access token before it expires is 60 minutes, but it can be set to a maximum period of 15 days. This article provides a few measures on how to prevent Collector for ArcGIS from logging out without a data connection for an extended period.

Whenever Collector for ArcGIS detects a data connection, the user is automatically logged out from Collector for ArcGIS to renew the expired access token. The following precautions should be taken after downloading web maps for the field, and before the device with Collector for ArcGIS is used without a data connection.

Enable Airplane mode or disconnect WiFi

To prevent being logged out from Collector for ArcGIS, prevent Collector for ArcGIS from checking the validity of the access token. When Collector for ArcGIS does not find an expired access token, Collector for ArcGIS can still be used.

For more information on preparing Collector for ArcGIS to use offline, see the following documentation: Go offline.

Once maps are downloaded, enable Airplane mode on the device or disable Wi-Fi if the device does not have Airplane mode. Use Bluetooth to connect to a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver.

While in the field without data connection, ensure that the device remains in Airplane mode or Wi-Fi disabled. By restricting data connections to Collector for ArcGIS, the access token is not validated and the user is not logged out.

Ensure Collector for ArcGIS is running continuously

Aside from disabling Wi-Fi connections, ensure that Collector for ArcGIS is constantly running on the device and do not let the device shut down. If Collector for ArcGIS is closed or the device shuts down, the user is logged out automatically.
