PROBLEM

Having trouble with file handling and using Bing layers after reverting from ArcGIS 10.1 to 10

Last Published: April 26, 2020

Description

If the user has installed and uninstalled ArcGIS 10.1, and then installs ArcGIS 10.0 SP2, ArcGIS 10.0 SP3 or ArcGIS 10.0 SP4, they may encounter issues when trying to save, open files, or use Bing maps and layers in ArcGIS 10.0.

Double-clicking a file, such as an .mxd, .sxd, .3dd or a .lyr file to open it, may result in an ArcGISFileHandler.exe error. Opening Microsoft Bing maps or adding Bing layers may cause ArcGIS 10.0 to crash. Using the Save command in an ArcGIS Engine application may cause the application to crash.

Cause

ArcGISFileHelpLib.dll, which is left behind after ArcGIS 10.1 is uninstalled, can cause problems with file handling and Bing layers in ArcGIS 10.0.

Solution or Workaround

There are two options for resolving this issue.
  • Install ArcGIS 10.0 Service Pack 5.
  • a. Completely uninstall all ArcGIS products from the machine (including ArcGIS Explorer).
    b. Once every ArcGIS product has been uninstalled, ensure the ArcGISFileHelpLib.dll is no longer present in C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcGIS\bin, or on a 64-bit machine, in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcGIS\bin).
    c. If present, delete ArcGISFileHelperLib.dll before installing any ArcGIS products.
